an effort to "practice what we preach," Sequoia and Kings Canyon
National Parks power the Lookout Point air quality monitoring station,
residence and entrance station with electricity produced entirely from
alternative energy sources. For many years, a noisy propane generator
was the only source of electricity at Lookout Point. Things began to change
in 1983 with the installation of the site's air quality monitoring station.
This station operated reliably on solar power and demonstrated that solar
power was a viable option for the site. In 1991, Lookout Point converted
completely to solar power. Today, an expanded solar power system and
supplementary wind turbine provide more electricity than the old generator
with virtually no noise or noxious emissions. Quiet solitude has once
again returned to the old ranger station.
