The National Park Service manages nearly 400 units in the National Park System. Ninety-seven of these areas contain coastlines. Some units border the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans or the Gulf of Mexico; others are inland places with large bodies of water, such as the Great Lakes. Even some arid, land-locked regions in the Southwest host coastlines because of the large reservoirs within their boundaries.
