People who visited the caves a long time ago may remember that toward the
end of the tour they were allowed to touch two small stalagmites known as
the salt and pepper shakers. This is no longer allowed because the oils from
people's fingers discolored and polished the stalagmites which in turn could
have prevented calcite from being deposited. Part of the parks mission is
to protect and share resources with the public. For this reason they have
asked that people no longer touch the salt and pepper shakers so that no more
damage will be done; and the caves will be preserved for future generations.
