Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge contains shallow, flat-bottomed depressions, called saline lake beds, and shortgrass grama grasslands characteristic of the high plains. The lake beds attract enormous seasonal concentrations of waterfowl, including the largest concentration of wintering cranes in the United States.
