Big Bone Cave is significant primarily because of the discoveries of giant ground sloth bones in the cave passages. Scarcely less significant are discoveries of the bones of an herbivore about the size of a bear, and other animals. Located within Big Bone Cave State Natural Area, artifacts of the War of 1812 and Civil War saltpeter mining operations are also remarkably well preserved in the cave. Ownership: State.
