Nottingham Park Serpentine Barrens support unique serpentine grasslands, pitch pine, and open savanna communities that are especially adapted to the shallow and highly metallic soils and are maintained by frequent fires and other disturbances. The site contains many rare and endemic species, including one of the northernmost occurrences of fame flower and one of the largest populations in the world of the serpentine aster.
