National Cave and Karst Research Institute

Thank you for visiting the National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI) website. Formerly under the National Park Service, NCKRI has reorganized as a non-profit corporation with three primary partners: National Park Service, City of Carlsbad, and the State of New Mexico through the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (aka NM Tech). A new website for NCKRI is under development to reflect these changes and will be completed as soon as possible.

The goals of the National Cave and Karst Research Institute are to:

  • Advance cave and karst science by conducting, coordinating, and facilitating research.
  • Serve as a repository for and provide analysis and synthesis of speleological (cave related) information.
  • Foster partnerships and cooperation in cave and karst research, education, and management programs.
  • Promote and conduct cave and karst educational programs.
  • Promote national and international cooperative programs that further cave and karst research, education, and stewardship.
  • Develop and promote environmentally sound and sustainable cave and karst management practices.

Advances in Hypogene Karst Studies

Advances in Hypogene Karst Studies includes multiple examples of hypogene processes that demonstrate the variability and breadth of hypogene cave and karst systems with respect to speleogenetic evolution. The first section focuses on general theories of hypogene speleogenesis. The second section provides detailed studies of hypogene processes at specific sites, either individual caves or limited areas. The third section investigates hypogene processes from a broader perspective and regional-scale processes. The final section discusses the relationship between natural resources and hypogene processes. This report also marks the beginning of the new NCKRI Symposium publication series, collections of peer-reviewed manuscripts focused on a common theme in cave and karst science.

Advances in Hypogene Karst Studies edited by Dr. Kevin W. Stafford, Dr. Lewis Land, and Dr. George Veni. National Cave and Karst Research Institute Symposium 1, 2009, 182 pp. Available for $50 plus shipping/handling. Payable by Visa, MC, AMEX, or Discover cards via sales@nckri.org or by calling 001-575-887-5518, or by check written to “NCKRI” and sent to NCKRI, Attn: Debbie Herr, 1400 Commerce Drive, Box 4, Carlsbad, New Mexico, 88220, USA.

The Mystery of Black Water Cave

This children’s book, by Dr. Kevin Stafford and Lisa Majkowski, centers on a puzzling pollution problem with the water quality in Black Water Cave, with a group of cave animals solving the mystery. The book is geared toward elementary-aged students and introduces them to trogloxenes Randy Raccoon and Jake Snake, troglophiles Bethie Bat and Penny Packrat, troglobites Mrs. Fish and Sally Salamander, and several other cave creatures. Questions at the end reinforce learning and test comprehension; a companion teacher guide is digitally available.

This book highlights recent progress in hypogene cave and karst science, including some widely discussed and debated issues. Multiple examples of hypogene processes are included to demonstrate the variability and breadth of hypogene cave and karst systems with respect to speleogenetic evolution. It also marks the beginning of the new NCKRI Symposium publication series, collections of peer-reviewed manuscripts focused on a common theme in cave and karst science.

By Dr. Kevin Stafford and Lisa Majkowski, this is the National Cave and Karst Research Institute’s first children’s book, 2008, 48 pp. Available for $6 plus shipping and handling. Payable by Visa, MC, AMEX, or Discover cards via sales@nckri.org or by calling 001-575-887-5518, or by check written to “NCKRI” and sent to NCKRI, Attn: Debbie Herr, 1400 Commerce Drive, Box 4, Carlsbad, New Mexico 88220, USA.

Karst Groundwater Hazards Placemat

NCKRI’s karst groundwater hazards placemat clearly illustrates the many pollutant sources and routes into karst aquifers. It is fully laminated, dual-sided, with English on one side and Spanish on the other; for field, classroom, and dinner table use. Available for $6 plus shipping and handling. Payable by Visa, MC, AMEX, or Discover cards via sales@nckri.org or by calling 001-575-887-5518, or by check written to “NCKRI” and sent to NCKRI, Attn: Debbie Herr, 1400 Commerce Drive, Box 4, Carlsbad, New Mexico 88220.USA.

Hypogene Speleogenesis: Hydrogeological and Morphogenetic Perspective

by Dr. Alexander Klimchouk, National Cave and Karst Research Institute Special Paper No. 1, 2007, 106 pp. Available for $35 plus $7 domestic shipping or $15 international shipping.

This book, the first in a new series by the National Cave and Karst Research Institute, draws on international examples and the international experience of author Dr. Alexander Klimchouk to firmly establish hypogene speleogenesis as a major and wide-spread phenomenon. This book carefully outlines the characteristics of hypogenic karst aquifers, independent of their varied geochemistry, and provides practical guidance in recognizing such systems through more than 60 figures and 19 pages of color photos. Dr. Klimchouk concludes his book with a chapter that reevaluates karst management problems and economic resources relative to hypogenic processes. Hypogene Speleogenesis will be the starting point of many karst investigations for many years to come.
