Alien weeds Aliens in Your Neighborhood - Invasive Species Curriculum
An introduction to the national parks invasive weeds curriculum. "Aliens In Your Neighborhood" is not a curriculum about weeds, but instead provides a model for integrating a theme within a school's curriculum at the middle school level, as well as expanding it to multiple grade levels and subjects (math, language arts, social studies, art, etc.). The NPS, in cooperation with a wide variety of local, state, and other federal agencies, is working to control invasive species through cooperative partnerships with communities and unifying management plans. Invasive species know no boundaries; the aliens are in your neighborhood, and your students can help!

Cave and Karst Program Cave and Karst Program in the NPS
Caves and karst features occur in 120 parks in all regions of the National Park System (81 contain caves and an additional 39 contain karst). Over 3,900 caves are currently known throughout the system. Karst is a region of irregular topography with sinks, underground streams, and caves that were formed by dissolution of soluble rock.

CESU logo Cooperative Ecosystems Studies Units (CESUs)
Federal land management, environmental, and research agencies, along with the nation's universities, share several science-based goals in the 21st century. A national network of CESUs has been established to achieve the following overall goals: high-quality science, usable knowledge for resource managers, responsive technical assistance, continuing education, and cost-effective research programs.

Earthscope
Earthscope

EarthScope
EarthScope is a bold undertaking to apply modern observational, analytical and telecommunications technologies to investigate the structure and evolution of the North American continent and the physical processes controlling earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. EarthScope will provide a foundation for fundamental and applied research throughout the United States that will contribute to the mitigation of risks from geological hazards, the development of natural resources, and the public's understanding of the dynamic Earth.

Environmental Literacy Council Environmental Literacy Council - For Teachers
An independent, non-profit organization, the Council gives teachers the tools to help students develop environmental literacy: a fundamental understanding of the systems of the world, both living and non-living, along with the analytical skills needed to weigh scientific evidence and policy choices.

Girls Scouts Patch Girls Scouts of the USA in Partnership with the NPS
The existing partnership between the National Park Service and Girl Scouts of the USA through the Linking Girls To The Land initiative has expanded its scope by participating in the NPS Service to America patch program. The patch was designed to honor Girl Scouts who have completed 12 hours of volunteer service on national park lands throughout the United States. Projects can range from trail maintenance, exotic plant removal, forest and grassland restoration, reptillian and bird inventories, to assisting delivery of park programs to the public alongside National Park Service staff.

HOL logo Hands on the Land (HOL)

NPS Inventory illustration NPS Inventory and Monitoring
Baseline inventories of basic biological and geophysical natural resources will be completed for all natural resource parks. Data collected at the park level will be maintained in the park and also used to generate regional and national summaries of selected inventory items. Long-term monitoring programs will be developed to efficiently and effectively monitor ecosystem status and trends over time at various spatial scales.

NRC challenge photo NPS Natural Resource Challenge (NRC)
The NRC provides financial support to expand existing inventory programs and develop efficient ways to monitor the vital signs of natural systems. We enlist others in the scientific community to help and managers must have and apply this information to preserve our natural resources. Through the NRC, we are revitalizing and expanding our natural resource programs, strengthening partnerships with the scientific community, and sharing this knowledge with educational institutions and the public.
