Sustainability Projects

JBI actions exemplify stewardship of Jamaica Bay. We are committed to reducing energy and water consumption, to expanding recycling, and to minimizing waste generation and pollution in Gateway National Recreation Area. By highlighting our successful “green” actions, we will encourage sustainable land practices throughout the Jamaica Bay Watershed.

The Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program (MRRP) at Gateway National Recreation Area’s Jamaica Bay Unit is an effort to remove and recycle monofilament fishing line from our beaches. This program also educates the public on the environmental problems caused by monofilament and other marine debris.
