Diversity: Women in Science and Related Fields

The essence of a park is its resources and the essence of a park's staff is its diversity. Hence the National Park Service must have highly qualified and diverse staff to know, understand, maintain, and protect those resources unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations. Many parks hire biologists, botanists, ecologists, geologists, hydrologists, physical scientists, and education specialists or positions in similar professions to help obtain this goal. They aslo hire some in the technology fields such as GIS.

There are mentoring resources available from various sources, as well as professional societies and other resources to help women in the science fields, including the following:

Advocates for Women in Science, Engineering and Mathematics 
Regional network of science and technology practitioners, educators, parents, businesses and community organizations committed to the enrichment of opportunities for young women.

Association for Women Geoscientists 
To encourage the participation of women in the geosciences. The association promotes the exchange of educational, technical, and professional information to enhance the professional growth and advancement of women in the geosciences.

Association for Women in Mathematics
Dedicated to encouraging women in the mathematical sciences.

Association for Women in Science
Dedicated to achieving equity and full participation for women in science, mathematics, engineering and technology.

Biographies of African-American Women Scientists
Short biographies of contemporary African-American women scientists profiled in "The Faces of Science: African Americans in the Sciences."

Discussion group.

Committee on Women in Science and Engineering  
Serves as a national focus to advocate action for increasing the participation of women in the science and engineering workforce.

Women of NASA

Women's Initiatives Committee 
The Women's Initiatives Committee of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) aims to assist AIChE in taking a leadership role in promoting the entry, development and full participation of women in the Institute and the profession.
