NFD Kid's Page Interview...

What is your job, and what do you study?

I conduct studies of rocks of the State of Maryland to try to determine how and when they were formed as a basis for further studies of applied environmental geology.

What are you working on now?

I am currently studying the geology and stratigraphy of the Hagerstown Valley and how it affects sinkhole development. I am also working on Brachiopods and trilobites of the Redwall Limestone of Arizona, and Trilobites from the Fort Payne Formation of Georgia.

Where did you go to school? What were some of your favorite classes that you took?

I went to Indiana University of Pennsylvania, University of Missouri, and the University of Pittsburgh. My favorite Undergraduate class was Invertebrate Paleontology. My favorite Graduate-level classes were Applied Paleontology, Biostratigraphy, and Paleoecology.

Was there an experience you had that made you realize you wanted to be a paleontologist?

As a 7th grader I visited Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Afterwards I wanted to be a scientist.

What is your most memorable experience working with fossils?

Presenting my findings on trilobites at the International Trilobite Conference, Oxford England.

Do you have any advice for aspiring paleontologists?

Yes. You don't need to have the title or be paid as a paleontologist to do paleontology. Anyone can do paleontology. All you need is to gain some academic background and then show determination in collecting and studying fossils.
