Program Calendar

Each year there are two application periods for GeoCorps America / Geoscientists-in-the-Parks positions. Refer to the tables below for information regarding the application process and important deadlines.

Table 1. GIP Program Calendar for Spring & Summer Positions

NPS parks / regions / networks work with the NPS Geologic Resources Division (GRD) to determine their natural resource science management, education, and interpretive needs and enter their position descriptions on the Geological Society of America's (GSA) GeoCorps America website.

November

November 1: DEADLINE for NPS to submit position descriptions for spring/summer positions.

December - January

December 1:Spring/summer GIP positions are posted on the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America website where applicants can begin reviewing and applying for positions.

 

 

 

February - March

February 1: DEADLINE to submit applications for spring/summer positions.

early February: GSA screening committee conducts initial screening of spring/summer applications to ensure that applications provided to site supervisors are complete.

mid February: NPS Supervisors receive applications for spring/summer positions.

mid February to early March: Supervisors screen applications for spring/summer positions, conduct phone interviews with top candidates, and make an offer to the best candidate.

mid March: Interview / selection DEADLINE.

third week in March: DEADLINE for the selected applicant to accept or decline the position offer.

end of March: GSA sends acceptance packets to selected participants. Selected participant must sign an agreement to officially accept the position and agree to terms of the GeoCorps-GIP Program.

April

    GSA notifies applicants that were not selected for GeoCorps-GIP positions. Spring/summer positions can begin any time after April 1. Most positions begin in April or June.

September

mid September: DEADLINE for GeoCorps/GIP participants to send final report & program evaluation and for supervisors to submit an evaluation to give feedback on participant & program to the GSA. (NOTE: These dates may vary, depending on the end date of the position.)
