2010 Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program Calendars

In 2010 there will be two application periods for GeoCorps / Geoscientists-in-the-Parks positions as shown below.

2010 Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program Calendar for Spring / Summer Positions

DATE ACTION
Year-round -Parks / regions / networks work with GRD to determine their geoscience resource management, education, and interpretive needs. -Parks / regions / networks prepare draft position description and enter them on-line at: https://rock.geosociety.org/GeoCorps/
November -November 6: DEADLINE for submittal of position descriptions for spring/summer positions.
-GSA / GRD meet in mid-November to select GIP positions and notify parks / regions / networks that have / have not been selected for the GIP program.
-Parks / regions / networks selected for GIP placements determine funding for GIP and provide GIP Coordinator with account number to obligate funds through a program-wide task agreement. If GIP is to be paid for by the park association, send email authorizing payment to NPS-GRD.
December – January -GSA advertises spring/summer positions to GSA members & campus representatives.
-Applicants apply for positions.
February -February 2: Application postmark deadline for spring/summer positions.
-February 19: Supervisors receive applications for qualified applicants.
March -March 1 – 12: Supervisors conduct phone interviews for spring/summer positions and make offer to the top candidate.
-March 12: Interview / selection deadline.
-March 16: Deadline for the selected applicant to accept or decline the position offer.
-GSA sends acceptance packets to selected participants. Selected participant must sign an agreement to officially accept the positions and agree to the terms of the program.
April -GSA notifies applicants that were not selected for GeoCorps-GIP positions.
-Spring/summer positions begin any time after 4/1. Most positions begin either in April or June.
July -GSA bills NPS-GRD / park associations for spring/summer positions.
Sept -GSA notifies applicants that were not selected for GeoCorps-GIP positions.
-Sept. 10: Deadline for GeoCorps participants to send final report & evaluation materials and for supervisors to submit an evaluation form to give feedback on participant & program.
