Sample GIS Mapping Projects

Overview

The Geographic Information System is a useful tool for anwsering a number of air quality questions. Below are some examples of projects that have been requested and completed by the Air Resources Division.

Eastern US map
Appalachian Trail with Monitor Locations

Example 1: The Appalachian Trial covers over 2000 miles. What monitoring is nearby that would tell us the air quality?

Result: In this project, GIS maps (PDF, 380 kb) of nearby monitors from the major national networks were prepared. All of the nearby monitoring stations were identified.

Lake Mead Overview Map

Example 2: Lake Mead National Recreation Area is along the Colorado River just below the Grand Canyon and near Las Vagas. Mapping nearby monitors and emission sources is a first step towards producing detailed interpolation maps for the park unit.

Result: In this project, GIS maps (PDF, 1.4 mb) of nearby monitors and emission sources were prepared. Much detailed information is presented on the maps.

National Park Service Units within NonAttainment Areas

Example 3: Ozone non-attainments areas violate the National Ambient Air Quality Standard for human health.
What National Parks and FWS Refuges are in non-attainment areas?

Result: In this project, two GIS maps were prepared:

  • A map of National Park Service units in non-attainment areas.
  • A map of Fish and Wildlife Service refuges in non-attainment areas.
