Northerly View - Mount Hoffmann
Mount HoffmannLooking northerly your eyes are drawn to one of the highest peaks in view, the nearly 11,000 foot Mount Hoffmann, which is very near the geographic center of the park. The peak was named for Charles Hoffmann, the topographer with the 1863 California Geological Survey party led by biologist William Brewer. Brewer noted Mount Hoffmann in his journal on June 24, 1863,

Mount HoffmannThe scenic panorama from Mount Hoffmann is also a grand introduction to the geology of Yosemite. In discussing "how best to spend one's Yosemite time," John Muir suggested, "go straight to Mount Hoffmann. From the summit nearly all the Yosemite Park is displayed like a map." For those who wish to take Muir's advice, the summit is about 3 miles from the trailhead south of May Lake, and the elevation gain is about 2,000 feet.
