Opening pine cones after fire

Seedling pushing through undergrowth

Without fire, Sequoias reproduce at an alarmingly low rate. After a low-intensity blaze, cones open showering the ground with thousands of seeds. With an ash-enriched soil cover that protects them from birds and squirrels and helps them take root before they run out of nutrients and moisture, these seeds sprout and grow. Where fire clears out the forest debris and burns out some of the less fire resistant species, there are carpets of young sequoia seedlings taking advantage of the room and sunlight.
