n Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Yosemite National Parks and in Sequoia
National Forest some species, including giant sequoias and ponderosa pines
reproduce better after a low intensity fire. They are well-adapted to
the lightning fires that have burned frequently in the Sierra for centuries.
These species have immensely thick bark – three to four inches for the
ponderosa and a foot thick for giant sequoia – which acts as insulation
against the frequent low-intensity blazes that are supposed to burn in
these forests as part of the natural system.
