Giant sequoia

In Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Yosemite National Parks and in Sequoia National Forest some species, including giant sequoias and ponderosa pines reproduce better after a low intensity fire. They are well-adapted to the lightning fires that have burned frequently in the Sierra for centuries. These species have immensely thick bark – three to four inches for the ponderosa and a foot thick for giant sequoia – which acts as insulation against the frequent low-intensity blazes that are supposed to burn in these forests as part of the natural system.
